I just looked up Bartons Arms - what a shame it's closed! The wikipedia article on it also introduced me to an interesting new concept: the 'snob screen', which was apparently a screen that allowed middle-class drinkers to observe working-class ones without being observed themselves!

There is some kind of historic rationale for this. Victorian pubs were sometime graced by terrific stained glass (see the recently closed Barton Arms, haunt of rivals Aston Villa for example), so it’s imaginable to relieve yourself in such circumstances.
